When I think back to how I started sewing, I realize how much easier it felt because I had built-in sewing friends. I learned in college in a classroom full of people, and that community energy made it fun—asking questions, bragging about a win, or getting talked off the ledge when something looked “wrong.” But I also know a lot of you picked up sewing later, and when you’re the only person you know who sews, it can feel frustrating and honestly kind of lonely. In this livestream, I talk about the difference between just finishing projects and actually building a sewing life you love—one that includes community, support, and shared learning. I also share what I’ve been up to with my sister: a Texas shop hop (we’re doing the southeast region because 144 stores statewide is… a lot). I go on my little rant about “quilting cotton” not being a fabric type, and why quilt shops can be an amazing place for garment sewists—especially if you want to touch fabric in person. I show patterns I found (Closet Core, Anna Maria, Lisa & Co.) plus some fun vintage scores, and I talk through fabric weaves you’ll see in quilt shops (broadcloth, poplin, calico, chambray) and how I think about using them for clothing. And finally, I share what I’m building next: a Sew Together Community space where we can actually talk, get fitting eyes on projects, and make garment-sewing friends.
