My friend Jen came over while I was cutting into a new pattern and casually dropped a facing-finishing method that completely blew my mind. I cannot believe I’ve been sewing this long and never heard of it—because it gives you a gorgeous, clean facing edge without the usual “baste a quarter inch, fold, stitch again” routine (and honestly, after you try this, you’re not going to want to go back). In the video, I walk you through it step by step on a quilting cotton dress using lightweight Pellon fusible interfacing. Here’s the big switch: instead of fusing interfacing the normal way first, I sew the facing and interfacing together along the lower edge with right sides together (yes—interfacing right side down, so the pebbly adhesive side is facing up). Then I clip curves, trim the seam allowance down, flip the interfacing to the wrong side, pin, and press (not iron!) using muslin as a press cloth to avoid any gummy mess. The result is a beautifully finished bottom edge that looks so much more professional and takes way less fussing. I also share pressing tips—heat, time, and working slowly to prevent puckers—and where this might not be ideal (like super thick fabrics).
