What if I told you everything you know about cutting fabric is only half the story? In this video, I tested an industry-style method that most home sewists don’t really mess with: cutting everything flat instead of cutting on the fold. The fabric that kicked off this whole experiment was a gorgeous striped wool jersey panel from Mood Fabrics—lightweight sweater knit, but still heavy enough that I knew folding it up and hoping the stripes behaved was going to be… a lot. My goal wasn’t just matching at the side seams. I wanted the stripes to stay straight around my body and look even across center front and center back. To make this work, I traced my McCall’s 7993 front and back into full “flattened” pattern pieces using tracing paper, then I added extra reference lines (center front all the way down, and perpendicular lines with my T-square) so I could actually line things up on the fabric. My table is only 36" wide and the fabric is 58" wide, so I also had to get creative with support and weights so the knit wouldn’t stretch off the edge. The big takeaway: for stripes and print placement—especially on knits—flat cutting was absolutely worth the effort. I’m not saying I’ll do this for every pattern, but when the design aesthetic depends on placement, this is how you get that polished, designer-level look.
