About This Video

It’s us again. In this build I turn an old bamboo basket into an impressive mini waterfall aquarium—an ugly duckling into a swan. First, Dad brushes oil inside the basket so the cement won’t stick, then pours cement to form the aquarium body (looks easy, but your arms will burn). While that cures, he makes a rock-solid base using a plastic bucket, sand, a PVC pipe in the center, and more cement. After a few days, we remove the basket, plaster the rim, and sculpt a big old cement tree trunk that will hold the waterfall system. Once everything is strong, I slide a water pipe inside the trunk, keep shaping, then sand the aquarium and tree smooth. My favorite part is decorating: a natural wood-brown finish on the trunk, navy blue on the aquarium and base for a mystical yet clean look, plus brown streaks for depth and gold on the base for that fancy touch. For the waterfall, Dad repurposes clay pots, drills holes so water flows through, adds angled PVC spouts, and mounts the whole system onto the trunk. Finally, I install the pump, add filter media to the pots and aquarium, plant aquatic greens, release the fish, and let the ecosystem stabilize—three days later the waterfall trickles and the fish swim around happily.
