I can't believe 1 in 5 Brits under 30 have never had a fry up! Just in case you were wondering, the recipe differs depending on where you live, but it's usually eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, black pudding and toast! I went Sky News to talk about why so many of us swapping them for avocado on toast and sweetcorn fritters! . Why our eating habits are changing is interesting 24% say a fry up was ‘too greasy’ and 71% say they would rather have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, smashed avocado on toast and oatmeal pancakes for breakfast. 42% said it ‘reminded them of men in vests hanging around in transport cafes’!! . Before we go racing down the road to a brave new breakfast future, it's worth remembering that demonising or labeling food as good or bad can be really unhelpful. While a more nutrient dense breakfast like #avoontoast could quite easily trump a fry up, this does depend on how the fry up has been prepared, how drowned in oils 🍶 salt, sugar and cooked with quality ingredients in a healthy way and portion sized. . For the record, fry-ups in moderation are totally okay and can be nutritious but you can also mix up the ingredients, from pork to veggie sausages, hash browns to wedges - you can adapt everything! . Ultimately, regardless of if you eat breakfast or not, traditions and times are changing its an interesting, exciting and terrifying time for health professionals like me with so many factors now to consider in how we communicate there’s the environment, ethical debates, affordability! I’ll just keep harping on about how we should think about what you can add into your diet, not what you can take out! . A little shoutout to my girl SkySarahJane who's also expecting what superwoman she is anchoring the news on telly every day!
