It works alongside calcium and phosphorus for healthy bones, muscles and teeth. 1. Get some sunshine We make vitamin D when our skin is exposed to the sun. Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight. The part of the sun's rays that is important is ultraviolet B (UVB). 2. Eat fortified foods Food manufacturers pump up some products by adding D during processing - these include fortified cereals, plant milks and yoghurts. 3.Expose your mushrooms to sunlight Mushrooms exposed to UV light produce vitamin D2 much like your skin cells do. Look for mushrooms in your grocery store that say "vitamin D" on the label, which pack roughly 400 IU per serving. 4.Eat wild salmon It's not easy to get adequate D from diet alone. But you can find a decent amount in salmon. We are advised by the NHS to eat 2 portions of fish a week once of which is oily. 5. Take a supplement The NHS states that we should all be taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D, particularly during autumn and winter.
