About This Video

Most airlines hate electric skateboards… but I flew with one anyway, and I filmed the whole thing so you can copy the process without guessing. The big rule you need to understand is battery size: most airlines allow up to 99Wh, and once you’re over 100Wh you’re basically asking for trouble. I used my Exway Wave with the air travel battery (99Wh), because it’s a lightweight shortboard (around 7kg) and the battery pops out fast, which makes TSA way less dramatic. I walk you through what I actually do: remove the battery before security, carry it separately (I literally keep it in my pocket or in my hand with my passport), and send both the battery and the board through screening. Don’t act weird—this isn’t plutonium—and if they ask, I just tell them I know the under-100Wh rule. After TSA, I reconnect the battery, and yeah, I even skate through the airport (use common sense and don’t get yourself tackled). On the plane, I stored the board in the overhead bin and even had a flight attendant help. I also cover what NOT to do (don’t lie about battery Wh), and how to deal with airlines that complain about “vehicles”: remove the front trucks or all four wheels so it’s basically just a deck. Plus, I show my quick trick to unstick the Wave battery by flipping the board nose-down and using leverage to pop it out.
