In this video I go on a bit of a rant, because I keep seeing the same dangerous mindset in dashcam clips: people treating right-of-way like it’s the “stand your ground” law. It’s not. Right-of-way doesn’t deputize you to enforce the rules of the road, and it sure as hell isn’t a license to escalate. A law enforcement officer explained it to me as “failure to use reasonable vigilance,” and that’s the whole point—defensive driving is about watching for conflict points and avoiding them, not proving you were technically right. I talk about how driving culture changes depending on where you are—like the difference between California “don’t signal until the last second” aggression and the more cooperative rhythm I’ve experienced up here in British Columbia where you signal and space magically opens. But even if you’re in a rough-and-tumble traffic zone, my advice stays the same: don’t enforce your right-of-way. Back off, leave the gap, let the merge happen, and keep things moving—because the second you turn it into a battle, traffic slows and the risk goes way up. If you’re towing, driving an RV, or just spending time on busy roads, take the high road. Put on a relaxing song, ask yourself what Jesus would do—whatever works—just don’t engage. And if someone’s road raging on you, pull into a public place, call the police, and don’t get out of your vehicle. Get home safe. Then go camping. Get busy living.
