About This Video

Sometimes all we’re looking for is a mechanical keyboard that feels and sounds great to type on—without the extra bells and whistles. In this video, I test and review the Royal Kludge R65 through the lens of that “essentialism” mindset: strip away the superfluous stuff, and focus on the parts that actually make the experience good. I unbox it, do a typing test, and break down the real-world pros and cons. The R65 is a compact 65% wired keyboard with full RGB, a rotary knob, hot-swap support, and (most importantly) a surprisingly creamy, premium-feeling stock typing experience. The linear creamy switches aren’t overly high-pitched, and the five layers of sound dampening plus the gasket-mount structure give it a more refined acoustic and flex than you’d expect at this price. I also love the MDA-profile PBT keycaps—flatter, blockier, and classier than the typical budget Cherry-profile look—and I was genuinely happy to see QMK/VIA support, because trusted software should be the baseline. For me, this is one of the most “complete” budget keyboards out right now because it nails the essentials.
