Can “premium” and “budget” really live in the same sentence? With the Akko x MonsGeek M1V5, I genuinely think it can. In this video I unbox the barebones M1V5, walk you through my assembly build, and do a typing test with Akko Green Jade switches and Womier Crystal Jelly keycaps. Even before it’s fully built, the fully CNC aluminum case is noticeably thick, solid, and heavy—in the best way. It feels like a keyboard that can take a beating from long productivity sessions or aggressive gaming, while still staying classy on the desk. What makes the M1V5 such a killer DIY experience is how much MonsGeek improved the foundation: five layers of sound dampening, a new double gasket structure, upgraded plate-mount stabilizers, plus an extra set of screw-in stabilizers if you prefer modding that way. The rotary knob is larger than most and “floats” so it won’t scratch the case. And the headliner? The rapid disassembly ball catch system—tool-free opening is a dream for anyone who likes to tinker. It’s not perfect though. I still don’t love the hidden Windows/Mac switch under Caps Lock, there’s no USB dongle storage, and the Moonlight White coating can scratch if you’re not careful. But for under $100 barebones, this is one of the most premium budget keyboards out right now. Why settle with boring? Make life click.
