About This Video

In this Shopify metafields tutorial, I walk you through exactly why metafields matter and how to set them up the right way as a beginner. The big problem I’m solving is this: if you add something like “fabric composition” directly inside your product template (like a normal text block), Shopify will show that same text on every product that uses that template. That’s fine for static info, but it breaks immediately when each product needs its own unique details—like a silk blouse vs. a winter coat. So I show you my step-by-step workflow: go to Settings → Custom data → Products, then add a metafield definition (I use “material composition”). From there, you choose the data type (I use single line text with a list of values), set character limits, and optionally enable it as a filter in the product index. After saving, you’ll see the metafield field appear at the bottom of each product in your Shopify admin, where you can enter product-specific values. Finally, I show how to display that metafield on your storefront by going to Online Store → Customize, adding a block (like Text or a Collapsible row), and using “Connect dynamic source” to pull in the metafield automatically.
