About This Video

In this video, I walk you through the practical ways to duplicate (or “copy”) a Shopify store in 2024, depending on what you’re actually trying to accomplish. The first thing I cover is the most common scenario: you want a safe sandbox to test changes—new themes, new styles, or a fresh variation of your current store—without breaking what’s live. For that, I show the simplest method inside Shopify: go to Online Store → Themes, hit the three dots on your current theme, and click Duplicate. That creates a copy in your theme library with your presets and layout, so you can tweak freely and publish only when you’re ready. Then I switch to the ownership-transfer scenario, where you’re selling the business or handing the store to someone else. I show how to do that properly through Settings → Users and permissions → Transfer ownership, where you add the new owner’s details and send the invite. I also call out the big warning: once they accept, they’re the owner and can remove you, edit billing, and even pause/close the store. Finally, if you need to copy actual store data into a different Shopify account (products, collections, customers, pages, redirects, metafields, and even the active theme), I demo using the DuplifY app. You install it on both stores, grab the destination store key, pick export options, and run either a free demo (5 products) or a full store export.
