I Upgraded My Audio Interface AGAIN .. BUT Which & WHY?? My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. All of my content is produced in Presonus studio one 6 which is my main daw and in terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use a Lauten Atlantis for all of my voice overs. About This Video

In this video I’m basically explaining why I upgraded my audio interface again, and why the Audient iD48 ended up being the solution for my studio rather than just another “new shiny thing”. I’d been running an Audient EVO 16 with extra I/O over ADAT (two expanders—one living in the live room, one in the control room for my 500-series/"nerack"). That setup was solid… until I decided I wanted to track drums through hardware in real time. Once you start adding analog inserts, multiple converters, ADAT routing, headphone feeds to the live room, and then trying to keep monitoring quality high, it turns into a convoluted nightmare really quickly. The big win with the iD48 for me is the individual send/return insert paths per mic input. I can take the mic pre signal, hit the ADC, go out to hardware (like my 500-series Fairchild/“grandchild”), and come straight back into a dedicated return—all inside the one unit. In the iD software I can switch paths in real time, so I can A/B “no compression” vs “Fairchild in” with literally a click, without repatching or rebuilding the session. It also fixed my workflow issues: fewer round trips, less buffer stress, and I can keep my monitoring chain (my Topping stack, calibration, headphone EQ and power) integrated properly so I can just walk in, press a few buttons, and work fast.
