In this video I finally sit down with the IK Multimedia Precision 5 mk2 and talk about the only thing that’s a genuine “huge upgrade” to my ears: the tweeter. It’s faster, cleaner, and feels lower distortion than the older Precision line I know well (especially the MTM mk1s). The standout is imaging—localisation is effortless, panning feels stupidly easy, and reverb tails/depth are really clear. If you’ve ever heard a Hifiman Edition XS, that “fast top end, precise placement” vibe is basically what these remind me of. But I’m also honest about what I don’t love: the woofer doesn’t keep up. The top end is rapid, yet the low end feels comparatively sluggish and a bit “disjointed,” and the speaker can give you what I call “fake bass”—a bigger-than-it-should-be low end that’s more coloured than accurate. My practical fix is simple: use the 50 Hz high-pass (or do it in ARC/ARX) so the woofer isn’t stressed and the bass you do hear is cleaner and more mixable. I also cover the move from Monitor X to ARC/ARX-style measurement options (1/7/21 points and sweet spot), and whether the Precision 5 mk2 makes sense at the price. For stereo mixing, I’d generally push you toward the Precision 6 or other options; for Atmos, these are genuinely tempting because localisation is the whole game.
