I’ve owned a Dolby Atmos room for a while, and this video is me basically saying: arguing about Atmos in 2025 like it’s a culture war is completely idiotic. I’m not here to sell you the “Atmos is the future” fairy tale, and I’m not here to tell you it’s dead either. I’m sitting on the fence as someone who’s invested in a 7.1.4 room, knows people working at the top end, and can see how this is actually playing out. I go through five reasons the internet rage is pointless. Stereo isn’t getting replaced anytime soon—stereo is still king, and the A‑list stereo guys aren’t budging. Most Atmos work exists alongside the stereo master, and if an Atmos mix doesn’t fold down close enough, it gets rejected. Then there’s the reality that most consumers can’t properly listen on a calibrated 7.1.4 setup, and the ADM “square peg in a round hole” fold-down compromises are real. The binaural side is also fundamentally flawed: no fixed target, headphone-dependent translation, HRTF variability, and gimmicky distance processing. I also call out the “Atmos is too expensive” take as often hypocritical—people spend more on stereo monitoring than my whole room cost. And finally: sound is subjective. I’ve literally had people get emotional in my room. Atmos can be amazing when it’s done right, but it doesn’t need to “win” for stereo to still matter.
