In this video I’m testing a genuinely interesting budget condenser: the Topping CL101 (around £130) — and yeah, I was paid by Topping to showcase the sound, so I’m being upfront about that. On paper it’s kind of mad for the money: shock mount, travel case, pop filter, a 34mm gold‑plated capsule with a 1" diaphragm, cardioid pattern with strong rear rejection up to about 2kHz, and an ultra-low self-noise spec (4 dBA). Topping are pitching it as a warmer/smoother alternative to the usual bright budget condensers, so I wanted to see if that “warm” thing is actually useful in a modern, ultra-clean preamp world. Rather than a straight shootout with the Lewitt LCT 440 PURE, I compared it to a mic I know very well: the sE 2200a — a mic that can get seriously airy/bright up top. I recorded my Epiphone Dove acoustic and my mate Billy Mitchell’s vocals through a Topping E8x8 interface with no processing, then showed how a simple high-pass at 120Hz on the CL101 cleans up the low-end rumble and makes it feel brighter without needing that hyped top end. On vocals I preferred the CL101 by a mile: it added body/chest and smoothed out the top end, while the sE brought out sibilance and some annoying upper-mid stuff for Billy’s voice. The takeaway is simple: “darker” isn’t worse — it often means less fighting in the 8–12k region, less de-essing, and a more mix-ready sound. And no, I’m not using the mic now… because I gave it to Billy.
