I tried to make this video about eight times because I couldn’t get to the point: you need to stop getting distracted. And yes, I know I’m the worst person to say it because I’m a YouTuber—reviewing gear, trying new plugins, getting sent stuff… it all benefits me. But the brutal truth is: the more I chased new toys, the less I actually mixed. And if I’m not mixing, I’m not building the experience that makes you better at mixing and mastering. I talk about how distraction shows up everywhere—plugins, gear, endless “tips”, forums, and especially monitoring. I went way too hard on budget speakers, trying to average loads of different boxes in one room, thinking that would equal translation. It didn’t. It just turned into a confusing cluster where nothing consistently made sense. This week I got PMC 226s, and for the first time in this room I could take my headphones off, hit the speakers, and the mix actually made sense—detail, placement, reverb tails, the lot. The takeaway: find tools that work and stick with them. More options doesn’t mean better decisions. I’m slimming down, focusing on trust and translation, and shifting the channel back toward problem-solving and transferable mixing knowledge rather than endless “new thing” rabbit holes.
