Have you ever tried to do a screen recording on your Mac and realized it’s just not possible to capture the audio that’s playing back on your system? In this video, I show you exactly how I do it at no cost, using a free virtual audio driver called Blackhole. By the end, you’ll be able to capture internal audio (YouTube, DAW playback, plugins, whatever) while recording your screen in QuickTime—cleanly and reliably. I walk you through every single step: downloading Blackhole from Existential.Audio, installing it (you might need a reboot), then setting things up properly in Audio MIDI Setup. If you want to record system audio only, you can keep it simple and just use Blackhole as the input in QuickTime. If you also want to record an external mic or interface at the same time (podcast, tutorial voiceover, etc.), I show you how to create an Aggregate Device for input and a Multi-Output Device so you can still hear your speakers/headphones while sending audio internally to QuickTime. I also rename the devices so they’re easy to spot, do a quick real-world test, and finally remind you to switch your Mac output back to your default when you’re done.
