In this video I break down why “fake” MIDI drums usually aren’t the software’s fault—it’s the way the part is written and how the sampler is being used. I show the classic giveaways (like impossible limb choices, everything slammed at 127, and parts that are perfectly on the grid), then I walk you through how I think about feel: playing slightly behind the grid for heavier sections, a bit ahead for urgency, and even letting fills rush a touch like real drummers often do. From there I go deep on dynamics and sound choice. I explain why metal producers tend to dial everything to 100% for impact (and why that backfires), how velocity should drop as speed increases, and why accents on hats/cymbals are non-negotiable. I also cover kit realism: two kicks shouldn’t sound identical, round-robin quality matters a lot for fast parts, and you want minimally processed samples so you’re not stuck with clicky/plastic transients forever. Finally, I show how I route programmed drums with multi-outs like a real kit, why a bit of bleed can actually help cohesion, and how tape saturation can tame digital peaks.
