One of the most challenging things we deal with in rock and metal is getting a mix that’s loud and impactful, but still clear. In this video, I break down why the “traditional” approach—heavy compression everywhere or slamming a limiter at the end of the mix buss—often comes at a high cost. You can get density and perceived loudness, sure, but you also invite intermodular distortion and you start killing your dynamics (hello pumping). For me, relying on one final limiter to do all the hard work is probably the worst way to go. So I show you how clippers actually solve the real problem: peak control. I demo hard clipping vs soft clipping on snare and kick, and then compare clippers against compressors and limiters on the drum bus and the master bus. The big takeaway is that clipping can shave off transient peaks in a very transparent way without changing the envelope—if you do it strategically and in moderation. I also cover the pitfalls (over-clipping, not gain-matching, clipping too hard on the mix buss) and why I prefer clipping “bits by bits” on tracks and buses so the master chain barely has to work.
