Recently I made a video about the best Warhammer models ever made… and then realised we’d all collectively forgotten the actual king. So in this one I fix that mistake by running through the winners of the Olden Demon Painting Competition 2024—where people take pre-millennium Games Workshop miniatures, hit them with modern competition techniques, and (ideally) keep that retro vibe alive with a nice green base. “Ideally” doing some heavy lifting there, because my moral compass—like the basing rules—is highly flexible. This year we had 291 entries, split pretty evenly between sci-fi and fantasy, and the standard has jumped hard: skin texture, secondary lighting, cleaner NMM—stuff that was rare last year is now everywhere, which made judging an absolute pain. I did multiple passes, pulled out a big commended pool, then finalists, then I nitpicked the top three… and then I changed my mind and did it again. For Fantasy, third went to Maxim Corbeil’s (technically 2003) White Dwarf, second to Sao Mii’s hyper-real Orc Warrior, and first to Nikolas Rubens Mortensen’s Chaos Champion—an object lesson in reflective NMM and tiny details that reveal themselves the longer you stare. For Sci‑Fi, Sao Mii took third with an Eldar Warlock, Darren Latham took second with a beautifully referenced Terminator Captain, and Sten Frödin won with the model we “proved” is the best: the classic Jes Goodwin Eldar Warlock—entered five times this year for a reason.
