Today we learn about the Eldar Avatar. Was it a game breaking beast or has it always been a bit of a mess on the tabletop? This video was filmed before I started experimented with AI enhanced images so its a little rough in places. Also, editing videos has been a bit of a learning experience so it will seem a bit clunky as well, let me know if you spot anything out of the ordinary. 🪙 Support the channel for great perks on Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/oldendemon/tiers 👕 Merch Shop: https://oldendemon.myspreadshop.co.uk/all 💻 Website: https://oldendemon.com/ 🖼️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chilvers_industries/ 📨 Email: oldendemon@gmail.com

About This Video

If you can turn your mind back to mid-’90s 40k, the Eldar Avatar was pure tabletop theatre: a gorgeous centerpiece, an even better excuse to ask strangers for superglue, and a perfect slice of “grimdark, but alien.” In this video I go through what the Avatar actually did in classic 2nd edition—why Weapon Skill 10 mattered, why it could mulch characters and tanks up close, and why its long shopping list of immunities (poison, virus, gas, blinding, plasma, melta, flamer) makes it look like an unstoppable monster on paper. Then the trouble starts once the game begins—because the Avatar is a square peg in an army full of round holes. Eldar don’t naturally escort a slow 300-point commander across the table, and the Wailing Doom’s single 12" shot doesn’t let it play “defensive dreadnought” either. Worse, 2nd edition heavy weapons are absolutely savage into multi-wound monsters: heavy bolters can spike D4 damage, lascannons swing for 2D6, and missile launchers can slap you with D10. Add mission cards like Assassins and the fact the Avatar is automatically your commander, and suddenly your nostalgic centerpiece is a liability. My takeaway: the Avatar is thematically excellent, but usually overshadowed by better-synergy Eldar options. You take it for nostalgia, for the nod from someone who recognises the old model—then you try very hard not to get it deleted by one rogue heavy-weapon shot.
