I’m about to torch my own credibility right out of the gate: I play more board games than miniature games these days, and that’s exactly why I felt qualified to put Talisman 5th Edition under the forensic lamp. In this video I cover what Talisman actually is, how it plays (roll a die, move, draw from the monolithic Adventure deck, occasionally steal someone’s best kit), and why—despite being easy to teach in about 60 seconds—it’s still not a good game in 2024. It’s a glammed-up snakes-and-ladders relic with first-player advantage, skip-turn nonsense, brutal swingy randomness, and a lack of real catch-up mechanics. Then I get into the problems people aren’t talking about: the interface and usability are a mess. The board doesn’t fold nicely unless you know the “chapel and city first” trick, the text is tiny, the board layout causes constant table-stops, and the insert is bafflingly designed for a game that will inevitably balloon with expansions—meaning the new cards and characters won’t fit unless you ditch the liner. I also raise my suspicions about the cover/board art looking… a bit too “early Stable Diffusion collage” for comfort. Finally, I give you the three legitimate reasons to buy it anyway: nostalgia, a communal club copy that lets tired humans decompress, and as an entry-level gateway drug for 8–12 year olds into board games and roleplaying. And if you want better alternatives, I rattle off a whole stack—from Lords of Waterdeep and Escape the Dark Castle to Arkham Horror, Outer Rim, and Gloomhaven.
