What’s good everybody—on this one I’m reacting to Will Smith performing “You Can Make It” at the 2024 BET Awards, and I’m not gonna lie…I haven’t watched the BET Awards in years. I was curious how the night would feel with everything going on right now, plus the Kendrick vs Drake energy in the culture, and whether the performances would come with any side-choosing or bigger messages. I couldn’t watch the full show, but I grabbed the performances I wanted, and Will was the first one I had to check. I’ve been a fan of Will since the beginning—people forget he was one of my favorite artists and even won the very first MTV award for a hip-hop artist, so his legacy is real. The moment I saw the choir in his IG practice clips, I knew he was going somewhere different, and this song made perfect sense with everything he’s been through these last couple years. With Kirk Franklin (and that whole Sunday Service/choir vibe), the performance hit emotionally, and the message landed: tough times don’t last, tough people do. My biggest takeaway is simple—this record isn’t for us, it’s for him. You can feel it because we’re all going through something, but this was Will finding peace with himself, and I respect that. Second chances matter, and if you’re willing to change and take steps forward, you deserve one.
