About This Video

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to another episode of ink on the Marilyn Darling Show—today I’m swatching and testing Sailor Manyo Kaki (also known as “pimmen”). This one lives in that pinkyish, dusty-pink neighborhood, and it’s just a really nice, soft color that can lean a bit nude depending on what you put it next to. I run it through my usual routine: a water resistance test, toilet paper chromatography (with water and rubbing alcohol), and then a big ol’ paper parade so you can see how cooperative it is across the stuff you actually use. For water resistance, I was pleasantly surprised: it holds up a good amount, but because it’s such a light ink, I personally wouldn’t trust it on the outside of an envelope. The chromatography was the fun part—when I didn’t add water immediately, I got pink in the middle with orange and even a hint of yellow pushing out, and the rubbing alcohol barely budged the splotch. When I repeated the swatch, I saw a brownish tone come out with orange and pink—very interesting indeed. On paper, it behaved beautifully on most fountain-pen-friendly options (HP Premium 32lb, Rhodia, Midori MD, Tomoe River, etc.), but it feathered like a chicken on cheaper papers and that Pen+Gear envelope.
