About This Video

Welcome back to the Marilyn Darling Show—today I’m swatching and testing Noodler’s 1984 #2, which I’d describe as a blackish, purply-ish ink with a sneaky undertone. From what I remember, the original 1984 leaned more reddish underneath, but this one reads cooler—more purple/eggplant when you catch it in the right light. One thing I noticed right away is it dries fairly quickly, which usually tells me it’s absorbing into the paper fast… and that can sometimes mean feathering or bleed depending on what you’re writing on. I did my usual water resistance test and, ladies and gentlemen, it held up very well—definitely still readable, even if it got a bit smeary. I also ran two “toilet paper chromatographies,” and it was honestly a whole rainbow moment: pinky-purple, gray, tannish brown around the edges, plus hints of green and even a tinge of blue. Then I put it through a big paper lineup, from Rhodia and Hobonichi (beautiful—minimal ghosting, no bleeding) to some rougher notebook papers where it feathered like a chicken and bled to the page. Overall: a dark, interesting gray-black with purple vibes, strong water resistance, and paper really matters with this one.
