About This Video

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the Marilyn Darling Show—today I’m testing J. Herbin Bleu Verrerie, and yes… it is very blue. I swatch it, do my little whizzle, and then put it through a quick water resistance test. It’s not fully waterproof, but it does leave a little something behind, which means I’d feel okay using it on the outside of an envelope. I also do my two toilet paper chromatographies (one with water, one with rubbing alcohol), and this is where it gets interesting: there’s a gray base hanging around, plus a dark purpley-gray undertone, layered blues, and even a tiny peek of pink. Then I do what I always do—paper testing, because I more care about “feather like a chicken” and bleed-through than anything else. On better papers (like HP Premium 32 lb, Midori MD, Tomoe River, and several 120 GSM options), it behaves nicely and can even show a bit of sheen in spots. But on a lot of everyday papers, it gets feathery, bleedy, and ghosty, and that’s a dealbreaker for me. Bottom line: I personally wouldn’t buy this ink unless you’re willing to use really good paper, because I can’t stand feathering, period. The end.
