About This Video

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Marilyn Darling Show—today I’m finally sitting down to do what I came here for: an ink review of Diamine Marine. It’s 91 degrees in “Disneyland California,” I’m exhausted from running errands, and yes, I got distracted by Chinese food fortunes for a hot second… but then it was time to play with ink. Diamine Marine is a really pretty turquoisey, tealy-blue ink—one of my favorites—and on the comparison panel you can see that gorgeous shading right away. I put it through my usual tests: a water resistance swipe (and honestly, I wouldn’t trust it on the outside of an envelope), plus toilet paper chromatography with water and rubbing alcohol. Both show a darker blue core with lighter blue pushing out, and the alcohol one has that interesting dark splotch in the middle. Then I ran it across a whole stack of papers—from Walmart Pen+Gear and Five Star (hello feathering/bleeding/ghosting) to Rhodia, HP Premium 32lb, Midori MD, Tomoe River 68gsm, and Hobonichi-style paper where it looks absolutely beautiful. In the end, it lands in that teal family for me, and it’s right up there with Diamine Subzero—pretty, shadey, and just plain fun.
