"We wish we had never asked for help" - Josh's story

🚨 ITV News Peter Smith re-visits Josh and his family’s story. Shockingly, it’s not unique. Too many people with a learning disability and/or autistic people are locked away and being restrained in mental health hospitals, 2,030 people are currently locked away.  💬 Dan Scorer, Mencap Head of Policy & Public Affairs, shared with @itv: “This shows some of the appalling treatment that’s happening behind closed doors. We know people are having their human rights breached and there are many others, like Josh, who shouldn’t be locked away in the first place.” Dan continued, “The Government have promised to reform the Mental Health Act - the law that currently allows people with a learning disability and / or autistic people without a mental health condition to be detained in mental health hospitals. But, a major issue hiding in plain sight is that the key change in the law to stop the inappropriate detention of people with a learning disability and / or autistic people will only be switched on when sufficient community support is judged by the government to be in place. This means that the change to what the law says could be passed by MPs, but the Government will never make it happen on the ground. There’s still time to address this, by amending the Mental Health Bill, and demanding a proper plan for change, before it’s too late.”   👉 There’s still time to act. Help end inappropriate detention.
