In this reaction, I’m watching a “Biggest Megaprojects Under Construction in 2024” video from the Mega Builds channel and just kind of letting my brain run wild at how far humans will go to build… everything. We get into massive rail and transit projects like Stuttgart 21 in Germany (rotating a whole station and moving it underground), the BART extension in San Jose (and yeah, I had to ask why 10 km can take until 2036), India’s Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail (this one actually makes a lot of sense to me), plus huge upgrades like the Gateway Program and the JFK airport redevelopment. From there it gets even crazier: ITER nuclear fusion (the “most expensive experiment” vibes were strong), Sydney’s metro tunneling under the harbor, LNG Canada, and the Grand Paris Express with the Olympics pressure. We also talk about the recurring theme with these projects: ambitious budgets and timelines that almost always blow up. And of course, we end on the big ones—Japan’s maglev Chuo Shinkansen, California’s high-speed rail (California… enough said), and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM. NEOM looks amazing on paper, but I can’t ignore the human rights concerns mentioned—bulldozing villages and forced evictions is just not it, no matter how “cool” the project is.
