In this reaction, I’m watching WatchMojo UK’s “Top 10 Things America Stole from Britain,” and I went into it thinking I’d recognize a few… but there were definitely some surprises. The list runs through stuff that feels super “American” on the surface—like apple pie, sandwiches, donuts, and even baseball—and then pulls the rug out by tracing the origins back to Britain (and Europe in general in a couple cases). I also couldn’t help throwing in my own food opinions along the way… like, I’m not really an apple pie person, but I will absolutely give credit where it’s due for chocolate bars. A couple moments stood out for me: learning the YMCA started as an English charity (before it became a disco anthem), and the whole plastic surgery segment—how it began as reconstructive work for injured soldiers and then turned into what it is today. I’m not judging anybody, but personally I don’t see myself doing anything cosmetic unless it was for an injury. And yes, I went off on a donut tangent—because if you come to Houston, Shipley Do-Nuts is the move. Also, I had no clue the Star-Spangled Banner melody came from an English drinking song, so that was a genuinely cool history nugget to end on.
