Over the next four days, I’m watching a very dangerous stretch of weather from Texas to the East Coast, and yes—this setup is actually very concerning. Today features an Enhanced (level 3/5) risk across parts of the Midwest and upper Ohio Valley with widespread damaging winds on the table (60–80 mph), large hail, and a very elevated tornado threat. A significant tornado outbreak is possible, but it’s not a slam dunk—morning convection and leftover rain could limit how quickly we warm up. If we can clear out and hit the upper 60s to 70s, it’s go time this afternoon, especially near southeast Iowa into western Illinois where any storm that develops will try to rotate. I also break down Friday, which looks like another major severe weather day from the Midwest into the southern Plains. I’m concerned about scattered to numerous damaging winds, very large hail (even baseball-size), and a tornado threat that peaks near the warm front—central/southern Iowa into northern Missouri and toward western Illinois. Much of Friday may evolve into more of a squall line day with embedded tornadoes, but any discrete storm could still produce a significant tornado. On top of all of that, parts of the Midwest/Great Lakes are dealing with heavy snow and ice, including ice storm warnings—so this is a multi-hazard event, and I’ll be live to track it in real time.
