About This Video

A prolonged stretch of severe weather is about to slam the United States, and in this forecast I break down why we’re not going to see a real break anytime soon. Today is officially day one of a multi-day severe weather outbreak, with over 20 million people in some level of risk. I walk through the main threats for today—damaging wind gusts around 50–70 mph, large hail up to golf ball size (and potentially bigger with discrete supercells), and a low-end tornado risk, including a close watch for a discrete cell firing northwest of Kansas City. Then I get into the bigger story: Sunday through Wednesday. The key word is uncertainty—say it with me, uncertainty—because storm mode and whether storms even fire will control how serious this gets. Sunday and Monday are conditional, especially along the dry line, but if storms can break the cap we’re talking baseball-plus hail, 60–70 mph winds, and tornado potential. Tuesday has the most of my attention right now with higher confidence in a significant setup from the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley back into Texas, and if we get discrete supercells near the warm front or dry line, a tornado outbreak is on the table. I also cover timing, overnight threats, flash flooding potential (2–4 inches with localized 6), and why you need multiple ways to receive alerts as we head into early next week.
