About This Video

Next week is shaping up to be a major stretch of severe weather, and in this forecast I break down why the pattern is about to flip into a “storm train” setup. The jet stream becomes increasingly unstable, we get dominant troughing along the West Coast, and ridging shifts east—opening the door for multiple storm systems to roll through the central and eastern United States. That means damaging winds, large to very large hail, and tornado potential will all be on the table, especially as Gulf moisture and instability spread across the Plains into the Ohio Valley. I also recap the recent Midwest/Ohio Valley event, where wind and hail largely went as forecast but the tornado threat underperformed (with possible surveys in Ohio/Indiana). Then I walk day-by-day through what I’m watching: a quieter weekend for most, a sneaky severe risk late Monday evening in the Upper Midwest, a larger-scale severe setup Tuesday from Michigan to Texas, and additional rounds mid-to-late week with another organized severe day looking possible by Friday. The big takeaway: between Tuesday and next weekend, I think we end up with two or three significant severe weather days—so if you’re in the Plains, Midwest, or Ohio Valley, you need to be paying very close attention.
