We’re going from record-breaking warmth into a much more chaotic setup as a powerful system comes out of the Rockies and ramps up across the Plains and Midwest. The big headline is Thursday: I’m watching a level 2/5 Slight Risk from around Columbus, Ohio back toward Springfield, Illinois, with a surrounding Marginal Risk that includes places like Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City (just south), and Pittsburgh. My biggest concerns right now are very large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes—especially if we can get any discrete supercells before storms cluster. I also break down timing: I expect storms to begin firing roughly 2–3 PM and continue into the evening, with the tornado threat peaking late afternoon into early evening near areas like Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Dayton. Later Thursday night into Friday morning, training storms could turn the flooding risk into one of the more concerning parts of this event, with widespread 1–3 inches of rain possible and locally higher totals. After that, we get a sharp cool-down with below-freezing temps returning for parts of the Midwest and Northeast, then warmth rebounds heading into early April—when I think the first week of April could get very active with multiple storm systems and more live coverage coming.
