About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the Sony ZV-1F in 2025 and answering the real question: who is this little camera actually for, and is it still worth buying when it’s sitting around $499 new. I recently picked one up used for $250, so I put it through the stuff people actually care about—webcam use, S-Log2/S-Log3, frame rates (4K 30 and 1080p 120), onboard audio, the fully articulating screen, and that wider 20mm full-frame equivalent field of view. Then I get into the flaws that matter. Active stabilization is basically a must, but it crops you closer to ~25mm which isn’t great for vlogging. If you want the full 20mm look without the crop, you’re stuck using Catalyst Browse as a workaround, and that’s the opposite of run-and-gun. I also talk about the 720p plug-and-play webcam limitation, inconsistent autofocus (plus that “jiggle” some people see), weak battery life, and the big one for cinematic shooting: they removed the built-in ND filter from the original ZV-1, so you end up fighting exposure and shutter speed. My takeaway: it’s not for photographers (JPEG only) and I don’t love it for hybrid users. If you’re living in auto, your iPhone is honestly the better buy. But if you want a cheap B-cam that matches Sony menus and can be graded to match something like my A7 IV, it can still make sense—especially used.
