They say life begins at the edge of your comfort zone, and this film is basically my love letter to the person who taught me that first: my mom. “Back to Her” is a cinematic short I made around her 60th birthday, built from our trip through Turkey—renting a car, intentionally avoiding the tour buses, getting lost, getting found, drinking tea with strangers, and laughing harder than we had in years. The story is about how she planted those seeds of adventure in me when we didn’t have much, and how those seeds eventually grew into a road that led me right back to her. On the gear side, all the drone footage you saw was shot on the DJI Mini 3 with an ND filter. There’s no D-Log on this camera, so I graded it from Rec.709 in post. I also used the Osmo Action 4 and my Sony A7 IV to round out the coverage. This one was super special because it’s not every day you get to make something for someone you love—and it reminded me that yes, there’s business and brands, but this is also artistic expression, and being able to gift a film like this is honestly one of the coolest parts of creating.
