Faux Metal Animal Bookends | Making Fake Copper Giraffe Bookends From a Baby Toy

I made a set of faux copper giraffe bookends to go in my son's room. I used a toy animal to make it. The Process: I started by purchasing a toy giraffe from the store. I decided that cutting up one of my son's toys was probably a bad idea. . . I then used some scrap plywood and cut it into 4 equal (Sort of) sizes. I used the square pieces to make two ninety degree sections and glued them together. I then cut the toy in half using a saw. I tried cutting it with a knife, but the plastic was too think to be safely cut this way. Once the wood glue was dry, I used epoxy (Link below) to secure the toy pieces to the bases. I painted everything black as a base coat. I then used some metallic paint and dry-brushed it on the high points and edges to create the aged cast copper look.
