IKEA basically gave smart home sensors a “budget section” — and I mean budget like “price of a Big Mac” budget. In this video I test IKEA’s new Matter over Thread lineup and answer the real question: are these $6–$8 sensors actually good enough to replace the premium stuff in my house, or are they just cheap? I ran them side-by-side with Eve sensors, checked how they behave in Apple Home, and then compared that experience to Homey Pro where I build all my automations. I also cover the real barrier to entry that nobody wants to talk about: a $7 sensor can become a $17 sensor real fast if you have to buy a HomePod or Apple TV 4K (Ethernet) just to make Matter over Thread work. From there, I break down each device: the $30 air quality sensor (with some weird Apple Home limitations), the chunky-but-solid contact sensor, the motion sensor that lagged and then went unresponsive, the temperature/humidity sensor that mostly matches Eve Room, and the surprisingly useful $6 button. The big wild card is the $8 water leak sensor — one of the most important sensors you can scatter around a house — but mine showed “unresponsive” in Apple Home even though it still alarmed and reconnected when it detected water. My takeaway: some of these are great gap-fillers, some aren’t ready for prime time, and the whole lineup is cheap enough to try… if you can actually buy them.
