About This Video

The bedroom is the one place I try to preserve ambience over visible tech. So in this video I build a super clean “glowing bed” upgrade: hidden, indirect under-bed lighting that doubles as a practical nightlight. The rule is simple—smart home tech in the bedroom should neither be seen nor heard—so everything gets installed on the inside of the bed frame where you can’t see the strip itself, but you still get that soft, floating-bed glow. I use a SwitchBot RGBICWW Matter light strip because it’s cheap, it’s long enough for a king bed, and it’s natively Matter-compatible so I don’t need a SwitchBot hub to bring it into Apple Home (it is Matter over Wi‑Fi, which I use sparingly—this is sparingly). Then I pair it with an Aqara P2 Matter-over-Thread motion sensor, but the real trick is placement: I mount it upside down under my wife’s nightstand so it triggers when feet hit the floor and head toward the bathroom, not when we roll over in bed. For automations, I keep it simple: only run it overnight, turn the strip on at 1%, and turn it off using my favorite “motion stopped + timer” logic (30 seconds) so it feels natural. Bonus: it’s also perfect for accent lighting in scenes, and you can get fancy with segmented colors in the SwitchBot app.
