About This Video

Philips Hue is the best in the industry…and also the most expensive. In this video I put Hue head-to-head with two popular “save some money” options—Aqara T2 and Nanoleaf A19—because I’m willing to bet you’ve done the exact same thing I did: buy a Hue starter kit, go back for more bulbs, see the prices, and suddenly start looking at cheaper alternatives. I walk through my actual setup (26 Hue lights on the Hue Bridge inside Apple Home) and I admit I’m breaking basically all my own rules: Hue is Zigbee, it needs a hub, and it’s not Matter or Thread—yet I still keep choosing it. Then I compare real-world color and brightness side-by-side in Apple Home by grouping all three bulbs and tapping around the color wheel. The big takeaway: Hue still wins for blues/purples and overall “quality of light,” but Aqara T2 legitimately surprised me in reds/oranges and even gave Hue a run for its money in a few colors. I also cover apps, protocols, and stability over time. I’m still team Hue for the colors, app, and long-term reliability, but if you’re trying to save money on standard A19 bulbs, that Aqara T2 at around $25 is starting to look really, really good.
