About This Video

In this video, I’m sharing my beginner-friendly routine for a flawless base makeup—and for me, it always starts with skincare. I cleanse with cleansing water (even if I washed my face in the morning, my skin can still be surprisingly dirty), because clean skin makes everything sit better. Then I go in with a toner pad that has two sides: I use the exfoliating side first to lift dead skin cells for a smoother texture, and then I flip to the moisturizing side to plump the skin and help prevent dry patches. Next, I layer serums because hydration is what keeps foundation from looking dry or cakey. I look for a serum that’s safe for sensitive skin, helps soothe and reduce redness, and hydrates without being heavy—thin enough that it won’t move foundation, but powerful enough to really sink in. I finish with another serum for extra radiance and glow. Normally, I’d use a primer after skin prep (I’m currently researching a good one and I’ll review it once I get it), but you’ll see my base still turns out smooth and long-wearing. For application, I use a spatula to keep the foundation layer thin and even, then blend with a disposable latex sponge (a beauty blender works too). I build a second layer for more coverage, apply carefully along the sides of the face, spot-conceal with a controlled amount using a brush, and set everything with setting powder using a puff to press it in without moving my base.
