About This Video

In this video I’m talking about the book Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Julia Smith—aka “therapy in a book” if you’re someone who needs emotional support in a really practical, readable way. I literally open it up and read the section on anger, because I love how it reframes anger as something that often sits on top of pain or fear. The book explains how we’re taught to fear anger or feel ashamed of it, so we push it down… and then it bubbles up later as an outburst that feels out of character. One of my favorite takeaways is that anger is there to agitate us to move—so physical movement can help use that emotional arousal the way it was designed to be used. Then I get into a concept she explains called emotional reasoning. The line that hits is basically: thoughts aren’t facts, and feelings aren’t facts either—emotions are information. When feelings are loud, intense, and overwhelming, it’s so easy to treat them like proof: “I feel it, therefore it must be true.” I like this part because it separates facts from feelings, and it reminds you that if you let feelings drive, they can start dictating your whole life and make you feel worse than you actually are. This is why I keep saying it: I love it, love it, love it.
