About This Video

In this video I review The DOSE Effect by TJ Power, and I’m telling you right now: I’m not a science girlie. Biology was never my strong point, so I genuinely appreciate when a book takes “sciencey” stuff—like brain chemicals—and explains it in a simple way without making me feel dumb. DOSE stands for dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, and I walk through what each one does: dopamine for motivation and drive, oxytocin for connection and self-belief, serotonin for mood/energy (and it’s mostly made in your gut), and endorphins for stress relief and calm. What I liked most is the awareness piece—realising sometimes it’s not that “my life is [bad],” it’s that my levels are low, and I need to boost them. He talks a lot about modern habits that crash our baseline (phones, social media, sugar, alcohol, staying indoors), and how older generations naturally got more of these chemicals through effort, movement, sunlight, and community. My honest rating: if you’re new to self-help or want a beginner-friendly intro to brain chemistry, I’d give it 4 stars. If you read self-help like me, it’s more of a 3-star because the advice can feel repetitive and a bit generic—even though the DOSE framework itself is useful.
