About This Video

On today’s Book Table I’m reviewing Make Your Bed by Admiral William McRaven, and yes—I also thought, “you mean people don’t make their beds every single morning?” I’ve got an unfair advantage because I went to boarding school, where making your bed was basically military drilling. So I wanted to see how a whole entire book could be written about one simple habit—and what else it’s really trying to teach. The big point isn’t the bed. It’s the small habits you overlook that stack into a better life. I break down the main lessons: start your day with a task completed (making your bed as discipline and a ripple effect of positivity), embrace failure to build resilience (failure and discomfort show you how motivated and resilient you really are), stand up to bullies (take back your power—bullies can be in school, family, or workplaces), and don’t go through life alone (teamwork and accountability help you go further). I also talk about “never ring the bell,” where I half-agree—because sometimes quitting is actually growth, like leaving a job that’s draining you. My honest take: it’s actionable, engaging, and inspirational, but also very military-focused and sometimes oversimplified/generic. Personally, I think his original speech is stronger than the whole book, but you can still read it and tell me if I’m wrong.
