Willow’s cough turned out to be heart failure—a condition where the heart can’t pump blood properly, causing fluid buildup and breathing troubles. Symptoms often mimic a respiratory infection, making early vet care vital. While there’s no cure, medication and supportive care can keep guinea pigs comfortable and extend their time. My baby lost her battle in my humane decision to put her down Wednesday, as she was breathing heavily from her chest, seemed weaker, and refused to eat. At her Tuesday vet checkup, she was doing okay. ---- Follow Me On Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/little_kingdom3/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@little_kingdom3?_t=8WEkvG3X0iU&_r=1 Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/justguineapigs1/?sender=787004241041499901&invite_code=04312af4ec474fa888438ae70093ed5c Amazon Storefront: (a small commission received - thank you): https://www.amazon.com/shop/little_kingdom3?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_aipsfshop_EKHYXZJ556E3ZVK7BMT3&language=en_US Music Credits: Vexento Sunrise - https://youtu.be/HlSopqiw0k0?si=evxh22pQ2fAYw4Rn Email (Business Inquires Only) justguineapigs1@gmail.com

About This Video

In this video, I’m sharing Willow’s story—because what started as a cough that I honestly thought was an upper respiratory infection turned out to be heart failure. I walk you through everything from the very beginning: noticing her coughing more during a dusty move, trying antibiotics first, and then the terrifying moment when she stopped coming out for pellets, became lethargic, and dropped weight fast. She was diagnosed with GI stasis, and I stayed home with her for two days straight doing critical care, probiotics, and supportive care until she finally started eating again. Even after she recovered from stasis, her breathing never fully improved, so I found an experienced exotic vet and we pushed for answers. The X-ray showed her heart was surrounded by fluid—her heart wasn’t even visible—and that’s when I was told Willow was in heart failure. I explain what heart failure is, why it can look just like a URI, the symptoms to watch for (labored breathing, crackling sounds, lethargy, weight loss, pale gums, cold feet/ears), and what diagnosis and treatment can look like. Willow was put on lifelong meds (enalapril and furosemide), and I also share supportive tips like keeping them warmer, adding cozy items, and limiting movement so their heart isn’t working overtime.
