In today’s video, I’m taking you thrift-with-me in Shimokitazawa (Shimokita), Tokyo—aka one of my favorite neighborhoods for vintage shopping. Even though it’s only October, it was honestly cold, so I went in with a “let’s find some unique pieces” mindset. I start my day the most important way: boba. I show you my go-to spot (it’s cheap and actually good), then we walk the little streets where you’ll see a mix of real vintage, curated secondhand, and also shops that feel more like “not truly vintage” (you’ll hear my opinions on that). I try on a bunch of outerwear because I’m always tempted by black jackets and long trench coats (they make me feel taller), but I’m also trying to be honest with myself because I already own too many dark pieces. I also pop into a funny little shop that sells Mexican items (yes… lots of Jesus), and I find some rings that feel heavy and good quality. Then I take you to one of my hidden-gem thrift stores that’s tucked away in a tiny alley—my kind of place—and I end up finding a knit hat that finally doesn’t make me look “stupid.” We refuel at my usual cafe (Dog Berry—yes, you can bring dogs), and then we finish at a chain thrift store (Kenji) to hunt for something unique. I even try asking for a discount on a jacket that was damaged—because sometimes you really have to check the inside before you fall in love.
