About This Video

In this video I’m talking about one of my favorite spring snow puzzles: timing a melt-freeze cycle so you actually hit corn snow instead of bulletproof refrozen junk or sloppy mashed potatoes. Corn is all about that sweet spot when the surface has softened just enough to carve and slash, but the base underneath is still supportive. If you show up too early, you’re chattering on ice; too late and you’re trenching through wet snow that wants to grab your board. I break down how I think about the day: overnight freeze, sun exposure, aspect, elevation, cloud cover, and wind. The goal is to “follow the sun” and ride the right slope at the right time, then move as the snow ripens. I also talk about what it feels like underfoot when it’s starting to come in, what it feels like when you’ve missed it, and how to use that feedback to adjust your plan. Takeaway: corn isn’t luck—it’s a schedule, and once you learn to read it, spring riding gets ridiculously fun.
