In this video I’m answering the question I get all the time: does a brand-new snowboard need an edge tune and a wax? Wax is a definite yes—especially on high-end sintered bases that come thirsty from the factory. The edge tune is a “depends,” because it comes down to the brand’s intention. Gentemstick are very clear on this: every board should get an initial tune right out of the wrapper, and I’m showing you what that first tune looks like and why it matters. The first edge tune takes more time, but it’s worth it if you care about turning feel and consistency. I walk through marking the contact points, rounding off the tips so the board isn’t catchy, and setting up a base bevel that supports smooth turning (I talk about 1° base bevel as a go-to). Then I get into side edge angles and how to change them to what you actually want, plus Gentemstick’s suggested detune approach.
