About This Video

I headed out to Moonstone Beach in Cambria, California to chase a couple sunsets (and deal with whatever the coast decided to throw at me). This one’s really about the simple joy of getting out there—watching the waves, waiting for the light, and trying to come home with one shot I really, really want. The first night was a lesson in timing: I watched a cloud/fog bank roll in like a wave right as the sun was about to dip, and it basically swallowed the horizon. Even that “miss” was cool in its own way—by the time I walked back to the hotel across the street, you couldn’t even see the beach. Gear-wise, I’m running my Canon R5 with a vintage 35mm (my FAT 67) and an ND filter, keeping ISO down around 100 and dragging the shutter to smooth the water. I also had another body going with an old Canon FL/FD 35mm on an adapter—aperture stuck wide open at f/2, so I’m riding shutter speed to make it work. And I show why I love shooting RAW, especially with vintage glass: the flares can be absolutely awesome, and you’ve got so much more you can do in editing than with a straight-out-of-camera JPEG.
